TracFone Teams With the University of Miami to Find Future Talent

TracFone Wireless, Inc. created a unique hackathon – called “TracHack” – with 102 students, most of whom are working towards their Master of Science in Business Analytics Degree at the University of Miami Herbert Business School.

Students worked together virtually in small groups over three weeks to create predictive models to solve the problems that arise for cellular customers as technology evolves.

These are real-world problems that TracFone’s team of data scientists tackle every day as the organization continues to seek innovations to improve customer experiences.

A win-win for TracFone, the students and ultimately the company’s customers, “TracHack” students had the opportunity to sharpen their skills with real-world problems, while soliciting advice and counsel from TracFone’s team of world-class data scientists. While TracFone was able to solicit fresh perspectives from future leaders in the fields of data science and artificial intelligence – in their back yard.

The accuracy and potential of each team’s solution was objectively evaluated using the Area Under Curve (AUC) value. The top three teams received trophies, a cash prize and of course, bragging rights.
